Play the song "We Didn't Start The Fire" for your students. Explain how Billy Joel used events, terms, and people associated with a specific time period in history to create the lyrics for this song. This is a great song for introducing Timeline skills and activities to your students.

There are numerous possibilities for extended writing assignments and cooperative projects involving  independent research and Flash media presentations.
 

  • write lyrics for one of the years since this song was released, (1989).
  • write lyrics for a year preceding the beginning of the song, (1949).
  • student could complete this assignment with a parent using their date of birth, year married...
  • student could write lyrics for each year of his/her life.
  • create an original "Flash" animation video for this song. Another flash version of the song. One more music video.
  • create a video interpretation for the Bowling For Soup song, "1985". ( watch music video )
  • students could use a web cam to create an original music video interpretation of any song, with or without lyrics.
