The song 1916 by Motorhead that describes the life of a soldier in World War 1. It tells you how it is when you enlist and all the positive things that were said about the war like people remembering who you are all start to fade away. Like he said And now there's nobody who remembers our names. Another thing was the harsh environment when he said And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood gives you a clear image of what the environment was like. I think the purpose of this song was to tell people that war isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The song Over There by George M. Cohan was from the governments point of view about World War 1. I think the purpose for this song was to make people feel a strong sense of citizenship and make them feel it was their duty to enlist. Also that war wouldn't be so bad and they would make their families proud like they said Make your daddy glad to have had such a lad. Over There was also used to spread a positive idea about the war.
Voices That Care was used in the Gulf War to show soldiers that the people back home had empathy for them and that they supported them no matter what as they said I'm not here to justify the cause Or count all the loss That's all been done before. It also makes them realize that their still remembered even though their not home like they said Feel in your heart how are love burns bright they also said Right or wrong, we're all praying you remain strong That's why were all here singing along which made them feel powerful and special because people that you thought were to busy with there own life took time out to say they love and support you. This song can also give the soldiers the will to fight remind them what their fighting for, and to keep moving.
All three of
these songs have an individual meaning all there own. 1916
is sad and depressing, Over There is a happy powerful song, and
Voices
That Care is a moving and empathetic song. It shows that a song
is a good way of getting a point or feeling across to the listener.
Also in some cases it can be a way of showing that you care.
