Dream Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

~ Langston Hughes ( 1902-1967)

"Let me tell you a story about right and wrong.
The left hand and the right hand.
The left hand is hate. The right hand is love."

Radio Raheem, Do the Right Thing (1989)

"...Got to give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be...

...People, people we are the same
No we're not the same
Cause we don't know the game
What we need is awareness, we can't get careless

...Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps

...What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
To make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be..."

Public Enemy's Fight The Power - Fear of A Black Planet (c) 1990

By what sends
the white kids
I ain't sent:
I know I can't
be President.
What don't bug
them white kids
sure bugs me:
We know everybody
ain't free.

Lies written down
for white folks
ain't for us a-tall:
Liberty And Justice--
Huh!--For All?

 ~ Langston Hughes ( 1902-1967)
